Why do so many commentators claim to be post sixties Che Guevaras whilst backing kleptomaniacs and propping up despots?

I think some people are simply weak-minded and so adopt a narrative that doesn’t require effort. There are still journalists and academics that talk about Milton Friedman’s free-market economic doctrine as if it is a religion, handed down by God. That it never worked and resulted in death and despair doesn’t phase them. Friedman won the Nobel Prize and was supported by the far right and the puppet despots, and that is too often accepted as proof of success.

It is no accident that academia has been hijacked by big money, many of the greatest crimes in history would not have been possible without a bunch of supercilious academics telling people it was all for their own good. Mainstream academics are given money and awards to make them credible and then they are wheeled out for comment to legitimise crimes against humanity. It has always been this way and any academic that doesn’t give his rubber stamp and actually thinks, is declared confused, eccentric, quaint, and not to be taken seriously.

It is the same with politics; these non-thinkers believe those that claim to be democratic and speak loudly of democracy are thereby the champions of human rights and political freedom. Nothing they do post election ever seems to change that. In Thailand, for example, a self-appointed champion of democracy put assassination squads on the streets and tortured and murdered thousands of people without even any pretence of due process – yet he is still declared as owning a monopoly on Thailand’s democratic aspirations. A lie becomes the truth when, the media reports it, the academics teach it, and the historians record it.

Many journalists and academics have admitted that they didn’t even attempt to question the propaganda and lies about WMDs that enabled the invasion of Iraq. A humanitarian disaster and the catalyst that ignited the present wars across the Middle-East and manufactured the millions of refugees that now destabilise Europe. Some have even gone further and said it couldn’t have happened if they had performed their duty and informed the public fairly and honestly. Yet they are not held accountable and, if anything, have become even worse because of it.

It seems talking about democracy is enough, and when you have finished your pretty speeches you can adopt the tactics of the worst Latin American jack-booted meat-packing political parties and still be lauded as a democrat and humanist. These non-thinkers will support wars that kill and maim in the millions, they will look the other way as people are put in secret prisons and tortured, they will make excuses as the nation’s wealth is pillaged and the poor go hungry, they will even declare a rigged election as free and fair. All this simply so they can insist they were right. “How many crimes are permitted simply because their authors could not endure being wrong.” – Albert Camus

  1. Hello Harlan Wolff,
I love writing, in the past, I’ve written kilos of pages that finished in a bin, because all was just rubbish and poorly written. I love reading books, do less now since I try to have different activities taking much time, but I still do read a lot on Internet. I also try as you know to interact on different subjects on FB. I admire the way you put words together in a way that attracts the reader. Will try to write more as I really enjoy it and follow your articles with much interest for the contents and for the style you use. Thank you for sharing your content.

Naomi Klein summed up the human results of Friedman’s brand of cruel selfish neoliberal economics in her classic book The Shock Doctrine. It is a sobering read.

Glyn Davies, America’s recently appointed US Ambassador in Bangkok, a foul mouthed bully, will be displeased if this root cause of public myth ever becomes well understood in Thailand.

    • Thank you Ilham.

The time is now. It is essential that people are presented with how the world works. Glyn Davies is merely doing what the ambassador of an empire hell bent on economic colonisation is expected to do, so he is unimportant. It is the intentions of the empire that are most important, because ambassadors come and go but the game continues.

      • Anglo-Zionist economic colonization of the ASEAN countries is doing well.

His Majesty King Bhumibol’s Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy seems to have been overshadowed by tacky colorful billboards on Thailand’s rural roadsides, which advertise the products of Monsanto and Syngenta.

Nearly all the food outlets in Chiang Mai Airport terminal sell nothing but westernized junk food.

Bangkok city commuters are subject to an endless barrage of me-first TV consumerism junk.

Asia’s traditional values are losing out.
